Airborne troops had "barracks bags" where their material possessions would be kept while they were in the front lines. They're names would be stenciled on the side and they would be entrusted to clerks and the like for storage until they came back.

As told by Donald Burgett in his series of memoirs (he was in Able company of the same regiment that the famed Easy company was part of), it was astonishingly common for the troops to come back and find these back slashed open and all the valuables taken from them.
