Jamestown was established in 1607 and had begun spreading out along the James River up to Henricus in 1619. Sgt. Sharp should be an easy man to find, the population being very small at the time. In fact, I can easily find that he was in the House of Burgesses in 1629. This requires that he owns land (usually given 50 acres), his area of representation being labelled as "The Neck of the Land". It's most likely he would have been farming tobacco.

He arrived during a boom in population, there being almost 1400 settlers in the area in 1622. 1622 was also the year that an attack by the Powhatans occurred, attempting to push the spreading newcomers back, killing about 1/3 of the residents who were too isolated to defend themselves. It didn't go well for either side, and eventually the Powhatans were forced to sue for peace.

Your best bet is to look into the early history of Jamestown to find where he lived and what he did. The courthouse in Jamestown that housed all of the public records burned down multiple times, so original documents will likely be sparse. However, a great deal of research has been done on the topic of the early settlers and Jamestown itself is a historic site and museum today.

Hey, please help!I'm British, and have found all roads in my genealogy research lead back to London. Except sgt sharp who went to Virginia in 1620, I've no idea why, and as a newby to this kind of thing i don't how to find out. Why would he be going to Virginia? what was Virginia like at the time? Any insight greatly appriciated x
