Why were some of the Northern states so quick to abolish slavery after the Revolutionary war?

Slavery wasn't as important economically in the northern states as it was in the southern states. Agriculture in the north was mostly confined to small farms, while southern states were home to large plantations which required a lot of man power to operate efficiently. Quite simply, there wasn't a huge need for slaves in many of the northern states.
