Ah, yes... it's about time for us to raise the flair tax to provide for more, uh, recreational activities for the moderators.

I mean, you think we enjoy spending our days banning neo-nazis, nuking memes from orbit, and strangling bots where they stand??

You know, I don't know anything about history, but my cousin's dog once belonged to a war memorabilia collector who verified for me via smoke signal on a rainy day that the Wehrmacht was made up entirely of unwilling slaves who loved the Jewish people and were never allowed to be jocular.

Also, I like burritos, so I can assume that the S.S. were motivated entirely by their desire for burritos, which explains why the concentration camps had no food.

So obviously all the other posts in this thread are bullshit.

According to my own tlacronology™© (which is correct and true because I'm a maverick who isn't brainwashed by LIES), the time between January 3rd 2011 and March 18th 2013 never actually happened and we're all just playing along with an embarrassing documentation mistake that the world's ruling cabal of I-can't-believe-they're-not-Jews made.

EducatedEvil

Happy 3rd Cake day to one of my favorite subs. Since this is probably the only time I will get to make any sort of contribution to this subreddit. Here are two sea stories from my past, both 20 years old.

I was in the Navy and friends with a guy. Let’s call him Guy. One day while out drinking on the town in a random Asian port he proposes an idea. He wants to buy a gun boat, arm it with twin browning 50s, find an unoccupied small island in Malaysia somewhere, and become a pirate. He asks if I would be interested. I replied “Arr me Cap’n call me matey.” Then I started laughing. When I caught my breath I could see by the scowl on his face he was serious. Then I said, let me think about it. We probably started talking about boobies after that.

Toward the end of my tour me and Guy where at his rack in the engineering berthing. He was showing me some new CDs he had just picked up and then got a gleam in his eye. “Check this out!” and then lifts up a pile of skivvies and to show me a folded up white rode with odd looking patches on it. I said something like cool Karate Gi I didn’t know you practiced. Then he said No this goes with it, and put on the pointy hood. Then he told me how a bunch of the other snipes got together and had regular meetings on board, and asked if I would be interested. I did not talk to him much after that.

TheForceiswithus

This is a great moment for /r/AskHistorians. The history buffs, long feared by family members on holiday for their seemingly endless lectures on the importance of heavy shot to privateers sailing out of Havanah in 1572, or the significance of Roman concrete-building techniques in rapid empire expansion, have, at long last, found a spotlight of their own with which they may finally illuminate the ignorant masses. For that, and for everything else, we thank you, Mods and Contributers.

How many historians does it take to change a light bulb?

There is a great deal of debate on this issue. Up until the mid-20th century, the accepted answer was ‘one’: and this Whiggish narrative underpinned a number of works that celebrated electrification and the march of progress in light-bulb changing. Beginning in the 1960s, however, social historians increasingly rejected the ‘Great Man’ school and produced revisionist narratives that stressed the contributions of research assistants and custodial staff. This new consensus was challenged, in turn, by women’s historians, who criticized the social interpretation for marginalizing women, and who argued that light bulbs are actually changed by department secretaries. Since the 1980s, however, postmodernist scholars have deconstructed what they characterize as a repressive hegemonic discourse of light-bulb changing, with its implicit binary opposition between ‘light’ and ‘darkness,’ and its phallogocentric privileging of the bulb over the socket, which they see as colonialist, sexist, and racist. Finally, a new generation of neo-conservative historians have concluded that the light never needed changing in the first place, and have praised political leaders like Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher for bringing back the old bulb. Clearly, much additional research remains to be done.

To be fair, I did nazi that coming. I came here to say this but boy, that escalated quickly so to the top with you! Lost it at 'This is why we can't have nice things' and then my faith in humanity was restored, my mind blown, and manly tears were shed. Well said. As a 'murican, I can confirm this gem has just won the internet and is doing it right. Just sayin', I know that feel, bro, and while that was a risky click, this post was a 9/10, would read again. I see what you did there and it feels good man. You're doing God's work, son. I laughed way harder than I should have at your list that seems legit and totally nailed it. You - I like you. You magnificent bastard; you, sir, are so brave, a gentleman and a scholar, and seeing how you are a redditor for 4 years, this checks out, so I'll allow it. I regret that I only have one upvote to give for this cool story, bro. CTRL+F "about tree fiddy" was not disappointed. Wait, why do I have you tagged as "NOPE NOPE NOPE"? Nice try, you monster. What did I just read? Dafuq? I read that as "YOU HAD ONE JOB". I can't fap to this. No true scotsman could see that this relevant XKCD was bad, and you should feel bad. You must be new to reddit, so I'll see your cakeday and raise you a karma train. One does not simply rustle my jimmies, not even once. This stahp gave me cancer for science, so that's enough internet for me today. OP is a fuzzy little man-peach, 2/10, would not bang. What is this I don't even know how is this wtf? Circlejerk must be leaking. This will get buried but brace yourselves, some men want to watch the world burn right in the feels. When you see it, they'll KILL IT WITH FIRE! But this has nothing to do with atheism. Lawyer up, delete facebook, hit the gym, and SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, said no one ever, so you wouldn't download a strawman. Damn onions, you scary like a BOSS. whoosh. Since rule #1 is 'be attractive', I'll just leave this here: This is my [f]irst post, be gentle. I have the weirdest boner right now. /thread.

Three soldiers are in Berlin at the end of WW2. A American, Englishman, and Soviet. They are talking about what life is like in their respective armies.

"In the Red Army we are fed 700 calories a day." Says the Russian.

"In the British army we are fed 900 calories a day." Says the Englishman.

The American smirks and says "In the American Army we are fed 1500 calories a day."

The Soviet sputters and fairly shouts "Impossible! No man can eat so much cabbage!"

Is there substantial evidence that at one point in time, neckbeards tipped their service workers in cash, and not fedoras?

DungeonPeaches

I lurk constantly, and I am somehow terrified of this jocularity.

erichiro

was the average pair of tits larger or smaller in the 6th century than in the present??

Gwydior

I can comment in this sub then?! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I love all you smart people who work so hard for this sub. Cheers for three years :)

zerbey

I can't think of anything jocular, so I'll just say congrats and thank you to the contributors for allowing me to learn something new every day.

FragrantBleach

HI GUYS ALL CAPS. I always read but can never comment and am not smart enough to ask anything. Thank you, I love you.

Fart.

myleskilloneous

Throughout history. Throughout history. Throughout history.

Just had to get that out of me since it's what keeps me posting in this sub 99% of the time.

Erisianistic

Dear askredifilter, why does soviet russia you?

temalyen

This will certainly be the only top level comment I can ever make in this subreddit. I must savor this feeling.

If you haven't tried leaving a top level comment, you really should.

Sr_DingDong

What's the best History joke you know?

CaptainKirk1701

you're joking right?

PlumbumDirigible

MRW "jocular".

ahampster

Shoutouts to one of the best mod teams for one of the best subs!

skyturnsred

I'm just posting because I can finally say something I posted in here didn't get deleted.

Conor1028

Most of my (400 or so) karma is from /r/pugs, and from this sub. Although this sub causes a lot more stress than /r/pugs.

Ciryandor

Speaking of being Joculatores...

wkuechen

What are are the days like for a typical European in the Past?

[deleted]

So, are we now forced to switch the downvote and upvote buttons? None of these are particularly informed, comprehensive, or helpful, except for the literally Hitler question, obviously.

RoyalPrinceSoldier

I just want to comment here even for once.

mrtheman28

My only chance to have a comment in this sub without it being deleted and I find a new word I plan on shoehorning into as many conversations as possible. Huzzah!

ManofManyTalentz

I heard someone was giving away buttons for this momentous occasion!

RhodyJim

Just because I can. Here's a picture of some boobies.

galbra

Not a historian or an active member of this community, but god damn do I like luking you guys. Thanks for all of it!

IAmAStory

I have nothing to contribute, woooooooo!

DragarD

It feels strange to post here knowing a mod won't hound me down for this.

Bagaratoni

I'm really worried somehow I'll be too jocular and get banned forever.

chew242

No bullshit, this is by far the most interesting sub I'm subscribed to. thanks for being massive assholes and letting us regular folk get blasted with some legit history, yo.

WolfBiedermanRocks

Why did Marx dislike Earl Grey tea? Because all proper tea is theft. BAZINGA.

valkyrie_cain

I posted a useless comment on /r/AskHistorians and it didn't get deleted!

raoul_duke72

I am as reddit old as this sub. I wish I was good enough at history to contribute, even with my degree you are all impressively thorough. Good on you all.

kajkavski

I'm a redditor three years ago. What is the first question in ask in /r/askhistorians?

I love this sub, but seeing how much quality time smart people put into it makes me worry about the job prospects for history majors.

RoboRay

The History Channel is an amazing educational resource.

sotosgc

My only post! Yeah!

ner_vod

This is so, strange

denzil_holles

Finally! I can write whatever I want in /r/askhistorians!

Uh...

fdedio

Oh goodie! Finally, I can post my favorite historical fact!

Hitler and all his Nazi gold were loaded onto a submarine in Berlin in 1945, before escaping to the Antarctic!

Source: Joseph Malta (did an interview with him before he died AND HE SAW THE PHOTOGRAPHS!

Swords used to weigh minimum of 13 kilos. In fact, people throughout history were supermen and super strong because of manual labour. No kings were good though, and they were all evil dictators of the free people.

toonmckenna

I love to speculate about the origin of myths but I didn't write a book so I can't say shit. But I said shit so what you gone do!?

Did you know Andrew Jackson's nickname used by his friends and colleagues was "badass motherfucker"? You can trust me, I'm an authentic historical historian.

Also we should make an episode of drunk history together sometime guys. I'll bring the booze.

jflch1

I have a serious question . Background on the three wise men . The ones in the Bible . Did they belong to a secret society ?

KillAllTheZombies

Just thanking the mods, this is great :)

crecentfresh

What was general MacArthur's first step when he helped rebuild Korea after the Vietnam war?

Incident_Reported

Shitposting in epic bread.

Brickie78

So in Game of Thrones there are dragons that breathe fire. What historical fire-breathing dragons is that based on?

Brickie78

What was High School like in ancient Greece? Did they still have padlocks on their lockers or would they have used another type of lock?

(An actual question asked in the "Historical Fiction" section on the National Novel-Writing Month board).

umpaloompa

I want to be part of the experience.

15rthughes

I fucking love this thread

Paulpaps

I'm just gonna say I love this sub. I hope to become a flaired user once I get my degree in the history of Scotland and Christianity.

Macmula

Huzzaa to the best sub in reddit subreddit history!

slymagpie

Why is Ask Historians so anti-humor? Seems to me that our ancestors knew how to have a good laugh...

Shad0wdar

This week I heard I can continue studying History at my unversity :D

jatorres

Jocular? I hardly know 'er!

Forggeter-v5

Now this, is a historic moment.

madmissileer

Who is Victor and why did he become such a prominent historian?

Kudder

I am here to make history; therefore ,you may reference to this comment in a future /r/askhistorians thread. For the future!

fgutz

Thanks for doing a great job at moderating and keeping this subreddit a place to get quality information.

I wish I had a clever meme-type photo or image to post for this one time that I could in this thread

scribbling_des

I think I'll use this time to ask a question.

Any of you experts willing to share your ages? I've always been curious. Also wonder about male/female, but not as much.

manueslapera

HAHAHAHA POOP!

yokhahn

It's a trap!, soon submitters making fun of this sub will all be banned!

Lazarite

This is probably the only time I can post in askhistorians without my comment being deleted.

Thanks to all the great contributors and moderators who keep this subreddit amazing.

MakerGrey

This post violates the twenty year rule. Please refrain from posting questions that aren't in accordance with our rules.

jmoriarty

As a big fan of this sub but not very familiar with its history, has there ever been a strictly jocular thread before in the history of /r/AskHistorians?

Sadbitcoiner

I would like to order one counter factual please and make it about Hitler.

whofinfarted

I'm so sad I missed this....

xavyre

I'm a history expert but I have no credentials to back that up.

DrFento

Original it was thought that Chuck Berry invented Rock & Roll in 1955. In 1985 it was later disproved and found out that he merely stole that signature sound evidence.

You know I once read a book about world war 1 when I was 10 years old, I think I'm pretty versed in my knowledge and I read that book like ten times, can I have a flair now?

newaccount21

I love that mydogbuddy is a website.

Barsam37

And ofc it's /u/Georgy_Zhukov who makes the thread, he is like the king of this subreddit.

LurkerTriumphant

I move that this post be removed. It is an event occurring less than 20 years ago.

HISTORICAL POOP JOKES!

mycathumps

Serious historical question. Where did I put my hat?

pickle133hp

I saw a 100 pound chunk of Devonian shale atop a tree stump today. I concluded its a 360 million year old tree stump.
I am the smart.

sovietmudkipz

Holy smokes; with as few replies the average ask historian thread gets, I'm surprised there are so many people in this thread.

pickle133hp

Who would win in a fight? Archimedes or Newton? Sources please.

pickle133hp

And Archimedes can use pi.

Can somebody tell me about how cool the A&M game was yesterday?

AdonisChrist

I don't know that I'll ever feel confident participating on this subreddit, as history is not my forte and I rarely care to find and cite sources for reddit comments, but god damnit I love that this place is here and that I can peruse it to my pleasure.

If I could I'd shower you all in gold. Reddit and otherwise. But I'm not super wealthy, so you'll have to do with thanks instead.

chefslapchop

What was the best year ever?

hairy1ime

DAE read the post title in Ron Swanson's voice?

Is it possible that Alexandar the Great could have conquored America? If so what kind of food would he have eated and waht job might he have had afterwords. I am writing a novel.

Now I'm concerned that I'm not smart enough or funny enough.

_TheLoneRangers

Happy Birthday, Thanks for all the hard work ! The quality and depth of information here is astounding. I would love to contribute, but I feel like my answer, while not incorrect, won't be up to the standards here.

ohyouknowhangingout

So is this the official end of Nazi Germany?

Erigion
funkb0mb

There may come a day when we care about sources, documents, and the socialogical lenses through which we view history.

But it is not this day!

yess5ss

Dear mods, give us an inch and we'll take a mile

Wild_Cabbage

I am taking everything this said to heart. IT IS ALL REAL

redw04

I have literally nothing of relevance to say, but this will be the only time I can ever post here, so SUCK IT MODS

HistoryQuestionAsker

Well...um, maybe there was a slight chance the Egyptians had a little extraterrestrial help building those big 3D triangles.

guimontag

Next year is there any way the mods can give everyone randomized flairs? Or is that something only reddit admins can do on april fool's day?

dirtyrottenshame

This is just my opinion, but I heard through a friend that Napoleon and Nelson were twins separated at birth.

Sorry, no sources, buy I'm pretty sure it's true.

Long time lurker here. Happy third, AH!

available_username2

well this is awkward

LogicalTom

The amount of pent up jocularity released in this thread is alarming. Have you really been holding that in for the last year? That can't be healthy.

thrasumachos

This needs to happen more often. Is there any askhistorianscirclejerk sub? (besides /r/badhistory, of course)

Miserably_Inadequate

I love you, /r/AskHistorians!

Wildfire9

I've wanted to say this for a very long time. I do feel there should be a halfway area for mod - deleted posts, sometimes I want to read a conversation even if deemed not worthy.

Other than that this sub is excellent.

It's my birthday too!

And for everyone else, jocularity!

AbCynthia956

I dropped by to catch a glimpse of jocular history. Well played. Carry on.

thepenismightiersir

I'm excited for the opportunity to comment. I hope another chance comes before the next annual celebratory post.

FutureSomebody

Just gonna comment on this historical thread. Don't mind me.

CantaloupeCamper

I can't wait to tell my kids someday about the time I posted in a thread on AskHistorians. They won't believe me of course, but I'll know it happened. Thanks everyone!

electricfalcons

I'm just taking the chance to comment without it being deleted. This is like a once in a lifetime opportunity for me since I have nothing to contribute.

KingLadislavJagiello

Y'all are great. If a bit fascist. But for a good cause. And really, which sub around here isn't? I love lurking anyway.

Tuxeedo

I knew a guy who knew a guy who had a brother that said that the roman empire was brought down by led poisoning. Did you guys also hear about how Hitler actually died in 1978 in Argentina?
