I heard that off a youtube video when I was younger and I just figured people died from gunshot wounds in the past because of the lack of proper medical care compared to now.
Am I right thinking that if I was shot by a pistol made around the time of 1911 I would be more likely to survive it than if I was shot by a pistol made today assuming both guns are in perfect condition.

Milk Duds are not a chocolate jelly bean. They are chocolate coated caramel.
To keep this history related, they were introduced in 1926 by Charles Holloway. His company also made Slo-Poke and Black Cow suckers.

Colt 1911 is a type of gun still in use today. So you would be getting shot by the same exact gun model if you were shot by a Colt 1911. There is more advanced ammo now. 380's in particular are more deadly thanks to modern ammo. The guns though are about the same. You can get some guns smaller in the same caliber now. Some guns are made of plastic now. But many guns are made just like in 1900.
This would require a very long and complicated analisis, and I think you are not really looking for one.
The easiest explanation is that as you go backward in time, guns shot out bullets at alower velovity, but (on average) bullets were higher caliber. This means, that if you were shot by a gun from say, 1700, the bullet would be much slower than one from a modern Glock, but would also be the size of a cherry.
On point-blank or short distance, a bullet from a musket would destroy you due to its size, and un-penetrative shape. All the kinetic energy of the bullet would be transfered to your body. However, the same bullet would lose energy mych faster, and from a large enough distance, you could stop it with a rotten plank.
Modern bullets fly much faster, but also penetrate the body much more easily. Thus, you are more likely to get shot through, even at a very large distance, but the bullet would not transfer as much energy to your body, since there would be less resistance from your body to an aerodynamic shape of it.
