Was it an actual lack of news, or were there other things going on which led to this? I have heard the claim that there was Royal news which they had been asked not to report on and instead of reporting on other things they did this and I would like to know the validity of it.
According to the BBC itself, it was due to government pressure over an interview:
on the evening before Good Friday, the Home Office was desperate to deny a newspaper account of an interview with the home secretary. It was aware that no newspapers would be published over Easter so it contacted the BBC - to ensure the denial was included in the evening radio news.
