Keith Lowe's book on the chaos in Europe after the formal end of combat operations between Allied and Axis forces called Savage Continent is a good read. The chapters devoted to the Polish-Ukrainian conflict and the Baltic Partisans do a fairly good job of establishing historical context for current relations between those countries and Russia.
