When a president signs a new bill into law what happens to the physical copy of the bill?
I asked this is another subreddit but since I'm interested in this from a historical perspectives i.e. legislation signed in the 1700's 1800's etc. Maybe someone here will know.
The National Archives were established in 1934 to create a central storage point for all US Government records; prior to this records were kept wherever was convenient for the clerks to stick them (attics, basements, &c).
Certain older documents are kept (or copies are kept) at the Library of Congress, especially those pertaining to the founding of the nation.
