Why are so many economic terms expressed in French, when the two most important (or prominent I suppose) economic thinkers known were English (Adam Smith) and German (Karl Marx)?
French was the diplomatic language in Europe for several centuries and would have been widely spoken throughout the academic community during their time. It's the same reason you see so much Greek and Latin in math and sciences.
