What was the sleeping attire for the south in 1926?

by Bnightwing

I am in a play based on a bank robbery in my home town in 1926, and my character is awoken in the middle of the night and I have to come out in my sleep clothes and I am wanting comedic affect, and historical accuracy so I was wondering is a red union suit is suitable? Or a night shirt and heart boxers?

I have a BFA in costume design, and an MFA in costume technology, so I know a bit of fashion history. Smoking jackets were quite popular in the twenties, and a union suit was absolutely acceptable undergarments. Colored boxer shorts were gaining popularity, but hearts probably weren't around yet.
