Hello historians, I have a few questions about living in Rome, in comparison to our life that we lead currently? I'm researching for a short story that I'll be making (cliche I know) about traveling to ancient Rome as a foreigner, aided by a slave who becomes his friend. If anything, I'm quite curious to find the answers to these questions since I've always wanted to know them.

• What era would be the best for having a character appear in? The Roman Empire isn't exactly a quick affair, and some times may have had its ups and downs. What age would be the best to appear in?

• Bathing: The hygiene of the Romans is famous, but I do not know as many details as I would like. Were bathers always naked? What would the slaves do to get clean, and would they help their masters bathe? Or was it segregated? Would slaves even have baths at all?

• How would you get clean? Did they use soap? I've heard that Romans would use oil and a scraper (strigil) to remove oil. Was it effective, and was it used after bathing? What would Romans do for their hair and for shaving? How would getting clean today differ from the Roman times, and what would shock someone who was used to our way of getting clean?

• Latrines: How would the experience differ from modern times and ancient? What about wiping, and of the difference of latrines from the upper, middle, and lower class?

• Dining: What was the dining experience, and how would it differ from today? What would be the etiquette, the food eaten in the (rich, middle class or lower class)? What would surprise a foreigner?

• Names: How were Roman slaves named? I understand the concept of Praenomen, Nomen, and Cognomen, but how would it work if you were a slave? I've often heard that the slave name would be reliant on the master's name. What would happen if a slave switched owners? Can you give me some examples of slave names? What would Romans think of a name like "Jason Isaac Allen" as a full name. What would they think of his first name, since Praenomen are normally taken from only a select few names?

• Clothing and shoes: How would the clothing differ from those of today and ancient times? Of course I know that Romans normally wore tunics, but I don't know all the details. Did they wear a belt, and if so, what was it called? Did they wear underwear, and if so, what what was it called, and how did it differ from today's underwear? If you were informally dressing to go outside, what would you wear if you were a guy? What would you wear if it was cold?

• What, in general, would a Roman have to teach to a culture-shocked visitor to Rome, besides the obvious issues with the language barrier?
