Steve Coll's book "Ghost Wars" which as far as I know is the most in depth history of the origins of 9/11 going back to the support for the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, concluded that the United States never trained or funded Osama Bin Laden. If I recall, his conclusion was that Bin Laden may have received money from Saudi intelligence, while American money and arms went through Pakistani ISI.

In any event, Bin Laden never worked for the US. Often times this photo pops up to prove that the US did. Except that that photo is not Osama Bin Laden.
