German memorializtion of World War I is a somewhat more complex entity. Unlike the British poppy, there was no unified master symbol for wartime remembrance or experience. This is partly a function of the highly fractious political situation of the Weimar Republic. Alleged veterans associations like the Stahlhelm often overlapped with right-wing nationalism and paramilitarism. The German right developed and articulated a symbolic language of folkloric militarism; often building and appropriating a wartime precedents such as Nailed statues in which individuals paid to hammer nails into wooden statues or crosses. Republican symbolic language of commemoration was relatively anemic compared to the right-wing efforts, but not for lack of trying. One thing that hobbled republican efforts was that the German right had politicized memory that they had to square both commemoration of veterans with an explicitly anti-war stance. It was difficult for a German soldier to simultaneously be a victim and a symbol of a triumphant German democracy. Other, more neutral, German symbols were the iron cross or German forests. The Third Reich further complicated this situation by rendering any memorialization of German veterans and suffering politically suspect.
