Australia gained its independence from a series of Constitutional Conventions and referendums in the 1890s (New Zealand had been part of these but decided to instead form its own country). Acts were passed too in the United Kingdom to grant Australia its constitution. On the 1st of January, 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. This process is known as the Federation of Australia. There had been no war of independence.
