What are the arguments for and against this belief?
Arguments: He never mentions Chinese characters, chopsticks, foot binding, or the Great Wall of China in his travelogues.
Counter arguments: It's possible that MP associated himself primarily with the Mongol social elite and therefore did not bother to record the practices of their lesser subjects, in this case the Han Chinese. The Mongols did not use chopsticks or write Chinese characters or practice foot binding. The Great Wall of China as well had not been built and would not be completed to its modern form until the Ming Dynasty, well after MP's journey. There's also the fact that he mentions the Mongol invasion of Japan, which is evidence that he did have relations with the Mongols, considering Europeans did not have knowledge of Japan's existence at the time.
