While reading up on some history of the Roman Republic, I've become very interested in the history of its rival, Carthage. There's a wealth of easily available material on Rome, but I haven't found so much on Carthage.
Does anyone have any recommendations for books/podcasts/documentaries/anything else which give a good introduction to the civilization?
Hello there! I highly recommend Dexter Hoyos' The Carthaginians (London and New York: Routledge, 2010), which provides a fairly up-to-date overview of the topic in about two hundred pages. I would avoid Richard Miles' Carthage Must Be Destroyed (New York: Viking, 2010); while his coverage of the period of the Punic Wars is okay, he makes a lot of careless mistakes and unsubstantiated claims early on in the book, especially when he discusses the Phoenician background. If you happen to be interested in the Phoenicians in general, you're best bet is Glenn Markoe's Phoenicians (Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 2000); it's free to read online via the UC Press website and Google Books! :)
