While not a comprehensive history, the Kingsford brand of consumer charcoal was established by Henry Ford in the 20's. Ford decided to maximize economic efficency by turning scrap wood, a byproduct of his automotive company, into a consumer commodity, to be sold for profit. The brand was named after E. G. Kingsford, a relation of Ford's who was involved in the development of the product's first manufacturing plant.
