Was worshiping planets a thing in the past?

by HighlyMeditated

how big was it? and what effects does it have thus far?

Different cultures provided for different assessments of the significance of the seven visible traveling celestial objects (the sun, moon, and five of the planets). Germanic cultures, for example, tended not to see any divine association with the planets. Associating a god with each planet was common in ancient Mesopotamia and (perhaps as a matter of diffusion, but possibly as a matter of an independent, parallel cultural development) Greece and Rome tended to do the same. I would not see it as worshiping planets, however. Ancient people may have regarded the various planets as symbols of the gods; regarding them as something along the line of surrogates, people may have watched the movements of the planets as a sign of divine moods and intentions, but actually worshiping the planets is another matter.
