One of the central thrusts of the book is that the migrants that moved from the South to the North really had very much in common with the immigrants moving to the United States in the decades preceding the Great Migration.
Well, it's a fantastic book and I was wondering if there were any books like it that dealt with the immigration to America preceding this or at around the same time.
I looked through the list of recommended books on this subreddit but I didn't see much which dealt with this topic specifically. Any recommendations would be delightful!
An absolutely fascinating book that discusses Irish immigration and the formation of racism in the United States is The Wages of Whiteness by David Roediger. It's a bit of a stretch in dealing with immigration, but I feel it really fleshes out racism through a Marxist interpretation (and I personally love it).
It will set up a nice background of why African Americans and immigrants have so much in common from a capitalistic standpoint. It's very scholarly and a bit dense (word wise, it's only like 250 or so pages). Hope this helps!
