I'm interested in any premodern technology and if you know of great books about other times, places, and fields feel free to recommend, but in particular something that deals with the middle ages and with large machinery, architecture, construction, etc. I'd really love details about how things worked and how they were made.
Big disclaimer: I haven't read this book yet but it looks good and it's on my shelf now for definite future reading. That said, Cathedral, Forge and Waterwheel: Technology and Invention in the Middle Ages by Joseph Gies and Frances Gies is the most readily available book that deals with the subject matter you've said your interested in. You can get a copy on Amazon pretty cheaply, it's not too long and it covers all sorts of technology from the full span of the Middle Ages.
I would recommend Lynn White's Medieval Technology and Social Change and Thomas Glick's From Muslim Fortress to Christian Castle.
