The Sutton Hoo helmet includes a full face mask. Would this have been entirely ceremonial, or were other similar helms used in the early middle ages?

The Staffordshire Hoard includes a cheek piece made of an alloy that would have allowed it to withstand blows while still appearing to be of gold. It is possible to look at these features of helmets to have been ceremonial and practical for battle - it is possible to be both.

edit: see also this site which has a more extensive discussion of these features of period helmets.
