In times and places with high maternal mortality, how were the infants fed and raised?

It would not be uncommon in a lot of situations for the infant to be nursed with another mother who had just given birth (and this could happen in situations where the mother was alive anyway, but didn't feel like nursing). It was also not uncommon for men to remarry to help raise children.
