How did the 'Mississippi Delta' region get it's name, when the actual river delta is in Louisiana? When did the name become commonplace?

I soon learned that the "Mississippi Delta" is actually the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta and is not a the true delta of the Mississippi but the common flood plain of the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers.
