The ill effects of alcoholism were already a topic of discourse in ancient Egipt, and its detrimental influence of health, especially of women, was widely disputed among Ancient Greek, and Chinese. Both pagan Romans, and early Christians explicitely spoke against alcoholism, and insisted on moderation.
