I half remember that in Medieval Europe there was a collection of nine or twelve notable mythical/historical characters that was a collection of pagan and christian characters. They were made into statues in churches and King Arthur and I think Charlemagne were members. Does this ring any bells for those medieval historians out there?
You are thinking of the Nine Worthies. They were first introduced by Jacques de Longuyon. They were considered exemplars of chivalry, and were broken into three triads: Pagans, Jews, and Christians.
The Pagans: Alexander, Julius Caesar and Hector The Jews: Judas Maccabeus, Joshua, and David The Christians: Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon, and King Arthur
