I was curious if anyone can point me to some instances of people claiming or implying that scientific evidence is incompatible with the Bible (or widely accepted Christian tradition) before Darwinism.

Virtually all of the ‘science is incompatible with faith’ arguments I hear are things we only discovered in the last 250 years or so, but a few individuals did hint at having agnostic positions before then. Were their arguments entirely philosophical?

Additionally, I realize the Copernican model of the universe is often pointed to as a threat to church tradition, but did that really cause any significant crisis of faith in educated circles? I know the last point would do better as it's own topic, but I am really hoping to find if there were any other arguments beyond the heliocentric model.
