Why are some countries referred to as male or female? When/where did this arise?
Why is Germany called the 'Fatherland' and why is Russia called the 'Motherland'?
more examples
There is no word in Russian that actually means "motherland" (just really родина, which more correctly translates to something like "native land"). Отечество also is sometimes translated as "motherland", though more correctly it actually means "fatherland".
The word in German, I believe, is vaterland, and it actually means "fatherland".
