This question is impossible to answer. Selfishness is an inherent part of the human condition, and anything that is part of the human condition will have an affect on the history of humanity. To quantify that across all of human history however, is pretty much impossible. Suffice to say that, as it is something that people have written about in relation to it being bad for a long time, it must have had a fairly large negative effect.
