What was Life Like for Gay Men and Women in the Western World in the 1920s-1940s?

I've heard that gay men and women had a rather vibrant community in Berlin and other German cities before Hitler became chancellor.

Is this true? And what was gay life like back then in Germany and other western nations?

I would recommend you read George Chauncey's masterpiece, Gay New York for a look at the gay male world in New York from 1890 - 1940. It's an easy read for non-historians, and very engaging.
