I was looking at a map of the dominion of Canada in my history classes which dates back to late 19th century (circa 1880). How were the maps so precise given the instruments that were available at that time? How did cartographers draw maps with such precision? How did they work? How did they travel in regions that were hardly accessible (think about the islands of Northern Canada)?
