Hi guys, I'm doing a report on African countries and was wondering could someone give me an explanation as to why the ivory coast is so poor? I've heard some people says it colonialism, other that I'd Multi-National corporations and some that its political regimes? Could someone explain to me the main causes or how all of these pieces fit unit the jigsaw?
Thanks, Tiptopgolfy
Since you say that this is for a report, I am reluctant to provide too much detail. On the topic of homework, the subreddit rules have this to say-
Our users aren't here to do your homework for you, but they might be willing to help. Remember: AskHistorians helps those who help themselves. Don't just give us your essay/assignment topic and ask us for ideas. Do some research of your own, then come to us with questions about what you've learned.
And I don't really want to write your report for you.
However, I can provide you with a little bit of direction. You have three of the main factors that are involved, Colonialism, corruption and poor management by Ivorian government, and the actions of multi-national corporations.
There are a few useful terms to know that will help you research how these three factors tie together. One term to read about is Neo-colonialism which will explain how the role of Multi-national corporations and the Ivorian government fit together.
Another useful term to know is Francafrique, which is closely tied to the concept of neo-colonialism, but specifically talks about the foreign policy of France towards her former colonies (cote d'ivoire among them) and of French corporations.
Finally, a topic you did not mention but should be aware of is the topic of International Monetary Fund loans, and the criticism that the conditions of these loans, combined with official corruption, result in failed economic policies, leaving African taxpayers on the hook.
Of course, you should also investigate what the IMF has to say about why their policies are correct, and they are instead responsible for economic growth. Then write whichever side you find most convincing.
Good luck with your research. When you have finished your report, if you would like for someone to proofread your report, feel free to PM me.
