But I have some free time and want to do some more reading, I have always liked the idea of reading history books and thought maybe you guys can help me to find some to read.
I am not a scholar, I am not looking to write my thesis so please give me books that are interesting to read but don't need a history degree to understand.
I am open to any history/ biographies, I would prefer some sort of action/ roman history or something.
Canadian history would be sweet, although I am not sure if there is actually interesting Canadian history.
One of my favourites is The Armada by Garrett Mattingly. Exceptionally well written and entertaining, very well researched but accessible to a general audience. Bit difficult to find these days, but you should be able to order it online.
And there's lots of interesting stuff in Canadian history! If you're interested in comemorating the centennial of the First World War, I suggest reading At the Sharp End by Tim Cook, about the Canadian Corps from 1914-16. The sequel, Shock Troops, covers 1916-18. Both very well written, engaging and well researched. Prepare for some disturbing and heartbreaking stuff though.
Not sure if I would say easy to read, but I would suggest Theodore Draper's A Struggle for Power. I think it should be required reading for every American. As a Canadian, it will also appeal to you.
