Public perception of Franklin/Eleanor Roosevelt marriage?

by braindamaged9

Watching PBS series & noticed every newspaper article announcing the marriage identified Franklin as "Eleanor's cousin."

Was cousin-marrying really so commonplace that nobody thought it was weird?

There are two branches of Roosevelts, descending from two brothers born in the late 18th century. Franklin came from the Hyde Park branch, while Eleanor came from the Long Island branch (which, incidentally, was also Teddy Roosevelt's branch).

I'll be able to cite my source when I get home this evening, I have a very thorough text on the Roosevelt family history lying around somewhere.
