"Zeeland" is an area in the south-western Netherlands. The islands of New Zealand where originally discovered by Abel Tasman and Dutch cartographers would call it "Nova Zeelandia", meaning New Zeeland. Zeeland was anglicised as Zealand with the colonisation of the land by the British, hence New Zealand.
