Where did the name of "gold" really come from?

by socium

I just received Reddit gold today and under that message was the following Did-You-Know:

Did you know: The word "gold" derives from the Old English word "gelo", which means "yellow".

I find this a bit odd since in Dutch "geld" stands for money. Also, the word "geel" stands for the color yellow, but that's Dutch and not Old English is it?

Dutch comes from Old Low Franconian, which is part of the West Germanic language family. Old English is also part of this group. And there are many more similarities between Dutch and English; moreso than the similarities between English and German.
