What did people do to defend structures and themselves against the rain in medieval times?

We have gutters, leak proof roofing, drainage, umbrellas etc. for rain water nowadays. But did people or towns take measures to protect against rain in medieval times?

For structures typically the roof would extend a decent amount beyond the walls of the structure. This would cause rain to fall farther away from the walls causing less damage to the structural integrity over time. It would also allow windows to have less rain getting inside and let people open their front door without getting hammered with rain.
