This story about King John (d.1216) appears in Matthew Paris's chronicle and is uncorroborated by any contemporary records or documentary sources. It is more likely that Paris is using this alleged (possibly entirely fabricated) incident as a stick to beat John with rather than accurately reflecting the events before his death.
