Is there any evidence stating what crops the early man planted? Do we know what the first people used as tools to plant their crops and how large the fields were? Do we know how large of a role crops played in feeding the first agricultural societies?
The first crops to be planted and domesticated by man depends on what area of the world you are looking at. The general archaeological consensus is that agriculture developed in several different parts of the world at roughly the same time period. In the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East/Southwest Asia, one of the first crops to be domesticated was wheat. In Eastern Asia, several strains of millet (like wheat, a type of cereal grain), which was followed somewhat later by rice. In Africa there were a variety of crops that were domesticated, including coffee, millet, and in some areas bananas and plantains. Finally, in the Americas, maize (corn), beans, and squash all show genetic evidence of having been domesticated very early on.
