What sort of interactions were there between Native populations and Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and Orangutans?

by MushroomMountain123

Before Europeans came into contact with these animals, what kind of interactions did humans have with great apes? Do they feature in any mythologies? Were they hunted for food? Did native peoples attribute to them certain characteristics we do today, like relatively high intelligence and a "close relation" to ourselves?

I'm secretly hoping someone tells me there were gorilla gods.

Edit: Forgot to mention Bonobos in the title. Them too.

I hate to be "that guy" and this well probably be removed, but I think this question would be answered better in another subreddit, maybe /r/askanthropology.
