I always notice that pirates have a close relationship with parrots. Video games, movies, and pop culture all seem to have this as a staple for a classic pirate.
Why are the two so closely related? And also, were parrots easily accessible through trade networks, etc?

But, short answer is that sailors in general during the Age of Sail (which, pirates were sailors) acquired exotic animals (in particular parrots) when they could trade/buy them on land. Some kept them as long term pets, many sold them on their return to Britain/Europe to a large market of bird sellers who could sell them to customers with expendable income. Pirate association is due to Robert Lewis Stevenson featuring one on the shoulder of Long John Silver in his fiction story, Treasure Island which shaped so much of the pirate mythology that survives to today.
