Have there been any real attempts to rewrite, from scratch, the US constitution? If not, why not? If so, what stopped it and what is stopping any discourse about this option now?

I am no expert in Constitutional law, but I find it really confusing that modern Americans refer to an outline for a country that was created 250+ years ago. Has any group felt this way through history, and how were their attempts met by the general public/contemporary agencies?

EDIT: Cause of the Rules

I'll leave this up since it has a legitimate historical question with it, but I would like to remind you about our rules regarding political grandstanding.
