Obviously there's been a significant amount of pieces published comparing Napoleon Bonaparte to Julius Caesar, but I've been interested in seeing what kind of similarities exist between the two pairs of uncle and nephew. It's interesting, to me at least, seeing how the two pairs were similarly related, intermittent periods existed between the nephews' ascendency from the uncles', and at least three served on a triumvirate. I'm eager to know if any articles have been published or if anyone has more speculation or opinion on the comparison.
I haven't seen many exact comparisons between the two as proper history wouldn't compare two people from different eras. That's being said, I wouldn't say that Napoleon tried to connect himself to anyone but Caesar. Imperial imagery is filled with eagles (Eagle standards were given to elite companies and recognized regiments) and olive branch crown. The only other frequently used symbol that isn't tied to Caesar would be the Bee, an Ancient and Christian symbol of diligence and subservience to the hive (read Nation).
So, the comparison is on purpose but by Napoleon rather than historians.
