Hey! I am looking to read a book (introductory) about Japanese history. I am looking for something that would be comprehensive and not necessarily focusing on just one period of the country's history. A good example of what I guess I am looking for is a book I read recently about Chinese history named "China: A History" by John Keay. Any suggestions/recommendations are welcome!
There are two good textbook surveys on modern Japan (ca. 1500s-present) by Kenneth Pyle and Marius Jansen. They are both named The Making of Modern Japan. A more comprehensive survey of Japanese history (ca. 500s- present) is The Japanese Experience: A Short History of Japan by W. G. Beasley.
