Marc Bloch (1886-1944). He studied agrarian history by actually getting out into the countryside and talking to farmers and their families. And after Germany invaded France, he took his scholarship about the oppression of the masses and he put it into practice. He used his rural connections to coordinate the French resistance, and when he was discovered, the Germans put him to death. Marc Bloch is a superb example of an erudite scholar and a sterling example of a compassionate human being.
