I hear that "xy was a really talented general" a lot. What made somebody a good strategist? What was a really good idea that made the outcome of a war unexpected?
Unfortunately, this varies from era to era and even conflict to conflict. There is no straight answer to this question and unfortunately, it is all too broad for this subreddit.
