300 years ago did most/any people in Japan believe in reincarnation?

It is very likely that most Japanese at the time (about 1714) believed in reincarnation. Most were Buddhist (practicing Buddhism and shugendo and local kami (spirit) worship co-existantly and without serious conflict.).
So, it is not very controversial to suggest that most would have believed in reincarnation.
