I've seen the theory floating around various social justice-y circles, but a few people have mentioned they heard in art history. I'm wondering if it's a well-accepted interpretation, or just a theory that happens to match the current zeitgeist of feminine power and self-expression.
Any assertion along these - or any specific lines - can only be fantasy. The art is from remote prehistory, and we cannot know the intention of the artist. No credible archaeologist would claim that it is a self-portrait, because no one can know what it is, so anyone asserts that any scenario was the case lacks credibility. It is possible to discuss what may have been the case, but ultimately, that sort of speculation is an exercise without satisfying conclusion - if credibility is to be maintained.
