Question about the premise of Asterix

by BZH_JJM

For those who don't know, Asterix is a French comic series based in the last unconquered Gaulish village in Roman times. In the books, the Romans surround the village with a number of camps. Would the Romans have actually devoted that much manpower to trying to conquer one village in an otherwise pacified area?

It is unlikely, the Romans were far more likely to send in too few due to a general sense of superiority of their army. However, we don't really have detailed records of how the Roman army behaved after a major campaign in terms of pacification--generally, the sources speak of that in very broad terms.
