Its quite obvious that in the early to mid 1900's that there was an astounding racist majority and the push for civil rights was one that grew ten fold and was popularized by media and such. Eventually Lyndon Johnson would sing the bill proposed by John Kennedy just a year before and months before his assassination.
That said, it's very doubtful that the majority of racism against blacks just suddenly vanished overnight, and that it would be a long trial before the majority became a minority. So that's what im asking, when was the societal views on blacks stop being racist ones, and what were some events, if any, that surved as turning points?
Well this won't answer your question fully, but maybe I can shed a little light on what was going on. Social attitudes toward racism itself were changing, even if casual racism was normal. Around the late 1800s and early 1900s H. P. Lovecraft had some rather nasty descriptions of black people in his works, describing them as brutish and stupid along with Arabs and Cubans. What's interesting is that many of Lovecraft's contemporaries were uncomfortable with all of the racist talk in his writing. http://lovecraft.wikia.com/wiki/Howard_Phillips_Lovecraft Here one can read that: "Lovecraft's racism has been a continued focus of scholarly and interpretive interest. S.T. Joshi, one of the foremost Lovecraft scholars, notes that 'There is no denying the reality of Lovecraft's racism, nor can it merely be passed off as "typical of his time," for it appears that Lovecraft expressed his views more pronouncedly (although usually not for publication) than many others of his era.' " I was also hoping to find you a letter from one of Lovecraft's friends which shows quite obviously that Lovecraft was considered out of line for his day and age, but I'm short on time. My point is that even in the early 1900s it was apparently not proper for people to go around referring to blacks as subhuman animals, even if racist and segregation-styled views were common.
