Where can I learn more about the history of weddings in the West?

by plaingirl

I'm looking for articles available to the public that aren't trying to sell me anything. I'd like to know things like when did brides start walking down the aisle? Information about what weddings looked like in the 1400-1600s in Italy would be especially interesting to me. I know this is a very broad topic, but anything on the subject would be great.

As a starting point, you might read some of the essays on the subject written by curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Here's one about weddings in the Italian Renaissance, which also addresses the subject of the processional. These are lovely, and of course there are pictures.
